چکیده

We report on the results of a search for Lyα emission from the host galaxy of the z = 2.140 GRB 011211 and other galaxies in its surrounding field. We detect Lyα emission from the host as well as from six other galaxies in the field. The restframe equivalent width of the Lyα line from the GRB 011211 host is about 21 Å. This is the fifth detection of Lyα emission out of five possible detections from GRB host galaxies, strongly indicating that GRB hosts, at least at high redshifts, are Lyα emitters. This is intriguing as only ∼25% of the Lyman-Break selected galaxies at similar redshifts have Lyα emission lines with restframe equivalent width larger than 20 Å. Possible explanations are i) a preference for GRB progenitors to be metal-poor as expected in the collapsar model, ii) an optical afterglow selection bias against dusty hosts, and iii) a higher fraction of Lyα emitters at the faint end of the luminosity function for high-z galaxies. Of these, the current evidence seems to

Probing the Gamma-ray Burst Progenitor by Lyman-alpha Emission of Host Galaxies

Theoretical and observational studies suggest that long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) preferentially occur in low metallicity environment. We discuss the possibility and theoretical aspects of using Lyman α emission properties of GRB host galaxies as a metallicity indicator of high redshift GRB environments, where direct metallicity measurements are not easy. We consider the fraction of Lyα emitters ...

Very Different X-ray to Optical Column Density Ratios in Γ-ray Burst Afterglows: Ionisation in Grb Environments

We compare the H I column densities from Lyα absorption to the metal column densities from X-ray absorption in γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. Eight bursts of seventeen entering the sample, have significant extragalactic X-ray absorptions. Of these we find a range in metallicities from sub-solar to a few hundred times the solar value. There is a complete lack of correlation between the X-ray and ...

Of the eight bursts for which useful measures are obtained we find a range in metallicities from sub-solar to a few hundred times the solar value. The lack of correlation in the column densities, and the large range and extreme values of these ‘me...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
